Curly Girl, Revisited. . .

Here's a post for my Curly Girls. (Or anyone who cares!) We're nearing the 8 week mark here of no shampoo. I have discovered that it is really hard to get a picture of your own hair, and that even when you get someone else to take the pic, it's hard to show that even after (nearly) 8 weeks of not shampooing, my hair is not greasy!

Can you tell?

Close up:

I do think, however, that these pictures show that I need a hair cut. I just wanted to wait a while and see if the experiment worked. I think I'll be treating myself to a hair cut next week. My first since May of 2008.

Lest anyone think, "Eeeew! You're not washing your hair?" No, that's not what I said. The Curly Girl philosophy is just not to use shampoo to do so. We simply use conditioner to massage the scalp, rinse and condition as usual. Except with a LOT more conditioner than I was using. (3tbsp!) Then once a week, instead of the plain old "conditioner wash" I mix in some brown sugar and do the "brown sugar scrub."

That part seemed weirder than the no shampoo thing. I didn't do it for the first month because I couldn't get past the idea of putting sugar of any kind into my hair. When I finally broke down and gave it a try, I couldn't believe how awesome it was.

I'm sold! It's Curly Girl for me from now on:-)

I think I might just have to get this book and check it out. Granted I work for the company that makes Dove lol

That's o.k. Amber. You use a lot more conditioner, so that should make up for it;-)

Has it made a difference in your hair? Is it better, easier to manage? Or the same?

Definitely feels better. I don't have as much frizzies, my scalp is actually CLEANER (?!), and my hair doesn't get that dull look that it used to get when I was shampooing every day and using a bunch of styling products. (Just using clear gel now.)

Now did the husband tell you how great your hair smelled or how sweet you were because of the sugar you were washing your hair with. I have to admit if I see Tracy doing this I am going to laugh my ass off.

Wow, I am definitely looking into this method!! My hair isn't as curly as yours, but it is losing even more curl lately- I think it changed with pregancy hormones. I'd love a new way to upkeep my hair and will check this out. Thanks!!

Your curls are gorgeous!

I have straight hair, but I have one slightly curly girl and one curly girl with tight little curls in the back.

Reading the curly girl book was helpful for me. I had just cut my oldest daughter's hair for the first time right before reading that book and then realized I should have cut it differently (at the end of a curl rather than just cutting straight across all of her hair at the same length).

I'm glad the no-shampoo is working for you! I might have to try a routine like that with my 2 year old someday.

By the way, our library system had the Curly Girl book, so if anyone is wanting to read it, you might try your local library or Inter Library Loan!

When I used to work as a Massage Therapist we used brown sugar scrubs on people's bodies so using in your hair isn't that far fetched for me. As far as the not shampooing thing, I've been doing that for years. My hair is really really really dry, I use warm water and conditioner daily. This seems to help a lot. I'm glad you found something that works for you :)
